Young surfer Nick (Hutcherson) thinks all his dreams have come true when he goes to visit his brother in Colombia. Against an idyllic backdrop of blue lagoons and white beaches, he falls madly in love with Maria (Claudia Traisac,“Cuentame”). It all seems perfect until he meets her uncle, the famous drug kingpin Pablo Escobar (Del Toro) and he finds his life is on the line when he’s pulled into the dangerous world of the family business. Escobar: Paradise Lost also stars Carlos Bardem (Black Souls), Laura Londoño (“La Bruja”) and Micke Moreno (“Reto de Mujer”).

Though it did not play theatrically in St. Louis and was not reviewed here at We Are Movie Geeks, the critics who have seen ESCOBAR: PARADISE LOST have been impressed.

Michael O’Sullivan of The Washington Post wrote:

“The suspense that Di Stefano generates in the film’s final hour is genuine, and the action gripping.”

Kate Muir of The UK Times said

“The movie contains a subtly crazed performance from Benicio del Toro as Escobar: one moment fooling around with his children in the hacienda swimming pool, fondling his gold taps, the next executing his enemies.”

David Ehrlich of Time Out wrote:

“When you’ve got Benicio Del Toro playing Pablo Escobar, the rest is just icing on the cake.”
