WATERSHIP DOWN Screens Midnights This Weekend at The Tivoli
“All the world will be your enemy, Prince of a Thousand enemies. And when they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you; digger, listener, runner, Prince with the swift warning. Be cunning, and full of tricks, and your people will never be destroyed. All the world will be your enemy, Prince of a Thousand enemies. And when they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you; digger, listener, runner, Prince with the swift warning. Be cunning, and full of tricks, and your people will never be destroyed. “
WATERSHIP DOWN screens midnights this weekend (May 15th and 16th) at The Tivoli Theater as part of their ‘Reel Late at The Tivoli’ Midnight Series.
Based upon Richard Adam’s famed novel of the same title, the animated feature WATERSHIP DOWN (1978) delves into the surprisingly violent world of a warren of rabbits as they seek to establish a new colony free of tyranny and human intervention.
Here’s where I usually give you my take on whatever movie is lined up but I’ve never seen WATERSHIP DOWN. However, it was well-reviewed when it was released in 1978:
Richard Schickel at TIME Magazine said that WATERSHIP DOWN is:
“A rare movie that keeps kids on the edge of their chairs without inducing in their parents an overwhelming desire to escape theirs for a smoke in the lobby.”
Richard Luck at Film4 wrote:
“A beautifully realised animation, Watership Down ultimately works because it doesn’t dilute the violence and drama of Adams’ book with a rose-tinted lens.”
Steven D. Greydanus at Decent Films Guide called WATERSHIP DOWN:
“A singular achievement in English-language animation: a thematically and emotionally rich cartoon about talking animals, untouched by sentiment and cutesiness.”
Sounds good to me! Admission is $8. Hope to see everyone this weekend at The Tivoli!
