The New HI-POINTE BACKLOT Theater Opens Friday with DIOR AND I
There’s a new theater in town! When I first heard that my favorite St. Louis movie house, The Hi-Pointe, was adding a second screen, I was concerned that they were going to cut their magnificent 450-seat movie palace in half to accommodate a second screen to stay competitive with the multiplexes. The Hi-Pointe, opened in 1922, is the oldest operating theater in the Missouri portion of the St. Louis area and the only single screener. Thankfully, my fears were put to rest when I found out that The Hi-Pointe Backlot, their new satellite theater, is located on the second floor of a building behind the main Hi-Pointe (1005 McCausland Ave.in St. Louis) and that the big theater still has all of its seats. This is exciting! The Hi-Pointe Backlot, which seats 50, opens this Friday, May 1st.
So what movie did they choose to inaugurate this grand opening? …….a documentary about the fashion industry!
DIOR AND I is Frédéric Tcheng’s solo directorial debut and brings the viewer inside the storied world of the Christian Dior fashion house with a privileged, behind-the-scenes look at the creation of Raf Simons’ first haute couture collection as its new artistic director-a true labor of love created by a dedicated group of collaborators. Melding the everyday, pressure-filled components of fashion with mysterious echoes from the iconic brand’s past, the film is also a colorful homage to the seamstresses who serve Simons’ vision.
I think I’ll choose a different film for my first Hi-Pointe Backlot experience, but critics who enjoy documentaries about the fashion industry are giving DIOR AND I high praise:
Mick LaSalle of The San Francisco Chronicle wrote:
“The documentary offers a privileged behind-the-scenes look at the workings of a business. It’s also about the difficulties of the creative process, the running of an organization, and the adjustments that must be made when a new boss is in town.”
Rich Cline of Shadows on the Wall says DIOR AND I is:
“Much more than a documentary about a fashion house, this film finds real resonance in its central characters”
Kenneth Turan of The Los Angeles Times claims:
“If the ungodly star-driven media frenzy that surrounds the spring collections of the great Paris houses like Christian Dior is the public face of designer fashion, DIOR AND I shows us that what goes on behind the scenes is even more intriguing.”
