You never know what’s brewing at Webster University’s Strange Brew cult film series. It’s always the first Wednesday evening of every month, and they always come up with some cult classic to show while enjoying some good food and great suds. The fun happens at Schlafly Bottleworks Restaurant and Bar in Maplewood (7260 Southwest Ave.- at Manchester – Maplewood, MO 63143). This week, on Wednesday May 7th at 8pm, it’s John Carpenter’s most misunderstood film – BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA

BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA was big-budget action/comedy/fantasy/martial arts hybrid that John Carpenter made in 1986. The plot is kind of hard to summarize– truck driving butt kicker Kurt Russell (doing a very funny imitation of John Wayne) gets involved with Chinese ghosts, sorcery, white slavery, warring gangs…you name it. The plot moves VERY quickly…it does make sense, but you have to pay full attention to every single line of dialogue and fill in some of the blanks yourself. The screenwriter, W.D. Richter, also did the screenplay for BUCKAROO BANZAI (which has also screened at the Stange Brew series) so if you can follow that film, you’ll follow this.

BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA offers up virtual non-stop action (love the sequence where two men are flying through the air while having a sword fight), great special effects, spiritual Chinese mysticism, and some hysterical one-liners from Russell. Basically, it was a really fun action movie but Universal didn’t have a clue how to sell it so it was a critical and financial bomb upon its initial release. But BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA has acquired a substantial cult following over the years and you’ll have your chance to see it on the big screen next Wednesday, May 7th
