STRANGER BY THE LAKE screens at 9:15pm Wednesday April 30th
An intensely erotic Hitchcockian thriller, STRANGER BY THE LAKE tells the story of Franck, who spends his summer days hopelessly searching for companionship at a popular gay cruising spot on the shores of a lake in rural France. The woods behind the beach are a place where fleeting, promiscuous sexual encounters frequently take place. One day, he meets Michel, an attractive yet darkly mysterious man, and falls blindly in love. When Franck witnesses Michel drowning his current partner, he chooses to ignore the danger and continue his passionate but potentially lethal relationship, becoming an accomplice to the man he desires. The Boston Globe writes: “Alain Guiraudie’s moral tale is so restrained and atmospheric that the nudity and graphic sex don’t upstage the creepy mood of seductive, inescapable doom.”
Tirdad Derakhshani at The Philadelphia Inquirer says of STRANGER BY THE LAKE:
“A stunning minimalist erotic thriller that explores with arresting photography and economical use of dialogue how human identity is defined, and sometimes imprisoned, by our desires, drives, and passions.”
Ray Pride at Newcity writes:
“Classically constructed, as rigid in its construction of suspense as any recent thriller, Alain Guiraudie’s “Stranger by the Lake” is a masterful work, uncluttered yet lush, formally mechanistic, yet always surprising.”
