New DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Poster

Sunday evening saw Apes on horseback in the first TV spot for DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES.

Today, 20th Century Fox released the 5th poster showing a softer side of Caesar (possibly comforting baby Cornelius?) for the upcoming sequel to RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES.

In the new film, a growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.

For the die-hard fans of the franchise, including yours truly, this sounds similar to the fifth film of the original series – 1973’s BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES.

Set in “North America – 2670 A.D.”, this sequel follows the ape leader, Caesar (Roddy McDowall), at least twelve years after he led the revolution in the previous film, CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES. In this post-nuclear society, Caesar tries to cultivate peace between the apes and the surviving humans. Caesar is married to Lisa (Natalie Trundy), the female ape of the previous film, and they have a son, named Cornelius (Bobby Porter) in honor of Caesar’s father from 1968’s PLANET OF THE APES.

RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, which opened theatrically during the summer of 2011, grossed nearly half a billion dollars worldwide.

Oscar-winning visual effects house WETA Digital – employing a new generation of the cutting edge performance capture technologies developed for Rise of the Apes and Avatar – will again render photo-realistic, emotionally-engaging apes. The film’s key behind-the-scenes team includes director of photography Michael Seresin, production designer James Chinland, and VFX Supervisors Joe Letteri and Dan Lemmon, VFX producers Ryan Stafford, editor Bill Hoy and Stan Salfas, and costume designer Melissa Brunning. The score is from the Academy Award winning composer Michael Giacchino (UP).

DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES is written by Mark Bomback and returning writers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver.

Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, Toby Kebbell, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Enrique Murciano, Kirk Acevedo, Karin Konoval, and Judy Greer star in director Matt Reeves’ film. A third movie was announced in January, scheduled for a July 29, 2016 release.

DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES will be in theaters July 11.
