THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN Screening at Schlafly Bottleworks April 3rd
“To a new world of gods and monsters!”
THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN will screen at Schlafly Bottleworks Thursday, April 3rd at 7pm
Sequels have long been one of the most embarrassing products of cinema, because they tend towards repetitiveness and faddish cash-in value rather than originality and integrity. There are exceptions of course, the first and foremost being THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1935)!
FRANKENSTEIN (1931) was startlingly good in a primitive way but the sequel was a sophisticated masterpiece of black comedy and the jewel in the crown of Universal’s Golden Age of Horror. It’s amazing how well THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN works and how well it’s stood the test of time. It’s less horror and more fairy tale, but the horror is still there. And so is the humor! And so is the depth of the most famous misunderstood Monster! Impossibly, Boris Karloff expanded on the role of ‘Frankenstein’s Monster’ to such a new height, that it’s never been equaled in any of the sequels, or in any of the remakes, or in any horror performance. It’s Karloff’s acting and James Whale’s direction that makes this one of the best horror movies ever made (definitely the best ‘Frankenstein’ movie ever made). There are so many scenes that have achieved classic status. Many are lifted from the novel; many are rehashed from the original film. No need to list them here; just sit back and enjoy! I’ve seen stunned reactions from people who have never seen THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN before. After 80 years, people are still affected by the film (especially the scene with the blind hermit), and 80 years from now, people will still be affected by it.
Now you’ll have the chance to see THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN in all its big screen glory when it plays Thursday April 3rd, at Schlafly Bottleworks (7260 Southwest Avenue Maplewood, MO 63143). The show begins at 7pm and yes, we will be showing the stunning Blu-ray transfer.
THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN is the fourth screening in a new subseries from A Film Series to promote the practice of Universal Design in the built environment.
