Turner Classic Movies (TCM) has unveiled the first three movies in the lineup for the 2014 TCM Classic Film Festival, including the recently restored Gone with the Wind (1939) and a presentation of The Wizard of Oz (1939) in its stunning new IMAX 3D format. Set to take place in Hollywood April 10-13, the fifth-annual edition of the festival will also include a screening of the Harold Lloyd comedy classic Why Worry? (1923), with legendary silent-film composer Carl Davis conducting the live world premiere performance of his new original score. Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz are each celebrating their 75th anniversaries in 2014.

Passes for the 2014 TCM Classic Film Festival are set to go on sale to the public Thursday, Nov. 14, at noon (ET). Passes can be purchased exclusively through the official festival website: http://www.tcm.com/festival. Descriptions for the first three films on the festival slate are included below. Additional screenings and events for the 2014 TCM Classic Film Festival will be announced over the coming months.

In addition to the anniversaries of The Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind, TCM’s April gathering will mark the fifth anniversary of the TCM Classic Film Festival. Making the event even more special, the 2014 TCM Classic Film Festival will coincide with TCM’s 20th anniversary as a leading authority in classic film.

TCM recently announced that the theme for the 2014 TCM Classic Film Festival will be Family in the Movies: The Ties that Bind. Throughout the four-day lineup, the festival will showcase on-screen clans of all types – big and small, happy and imperfect, musical and dramatic. In addition, the festival will spotlight the first families of Hollywood and the filmmaking dynasties that have entertained generations. And it will explore the kinship that connects close-knit groups of professionals behind the camera, such as the stock companies of classic Hollywood.

2014 TCM Classic Film Festival – Initial Slate

Gone with the Wind (1939) –75th anniversary – Presented in collaboration with Warner Bros. Studios

The TCM Classic Film Festival will celebrate the 75th anniversary of Gone with the Wind(1939), Margaret Mitchell’s sprawling Civil War-era drama, with the recent restoration. Vivien Leigh won an Oscar® as the ever-determined Scarlett O’Hara, with Clark Gable as the rakish Rhett Butler. Olivia de Havilland, Leslie Howard, Thomas Mitchell and Oscar-winner Hattie McDaniel also star. Gone with the Wind‘s eight Academy Awards® also include Best Picture, Best Director (Victor Fleming) and Best Screenplay (Sidney Howard).

The Wizard of Oz (1939) – 75th anniversary – Presented in IMAX® 3D in collaboration with Warner Bros. Studios

The TCM Classic Film Festival will celebrate the 75th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz (1939) with a screening of Warner Bros. Studios’ immersive IMAX® 3D edition. Judy Garland stars as L. Frank Baum’s Kansas-born heroine who finds herself flung beyond the rainbow into a magical land of witches, flying monkeys and munchkins. With Ray Bolger as the Scarecrow, Jack Haley as the Tin Man and Bert Lahr as the Cowardly Lion, she heads down the Yellow Brick Road to find the powerful Wizard (Frank Morgan) who can help her get back home. The Wizard of Oz‘s 3D conversion was a long and complex project that included an 8K scan of the original Technicolor camera negative and complex mapping of each frame to construct 3D imagery. The TCM Classic Film Festival’s presentation of The Wizard of Oz will be a golden opportunity for festival attendees to experience the film’s extraordinary IMAX 3D conversion.

Why Worry? (1923) – With Carl Davis conducting the live world premiere performance of his original score

Festival goers will be in stitches over Harold Lloyd’s hilarious comedy Why Worry? (1923), in which the bespectacled star plays a wealthy hypochondriac whose visit to an island paradise is interrupted by revolution. This marked Lloyd’s final film with producer Hal Roach and his first with leading lady Jobyna Ralston, who co-starred in his next five movies. The TCM Classic Film Festival’s presentation of Why Worry will feature legendary silent-film composer Carl Davis conducting the world premiere performance of his new original score for the movie.

Additional screenings and events for the 2014 TCM Classic Film Festival will be announced over the coming months.
