Go BACK TO SCHOOL Thursday Night at Schlafly Bottleworks with Rodney Dangerfield
“Bring us a pitcher of beer every seven minutes until somebody passes out. And then bring one every ten minutes.”
BACK TO SCHOOL is screening at 7pm this Thursday, September 5th at Schlafly Bottleworks – 7260 Southwest Ave St Louis, MO 63143. Doors open at 6:30pm. It’s a fundraiser for Helping Kids Together
BACK TO SCHOOL (1986) features Rodney Dangerfield in lovably crass form as Thornton Melon, a motormouth millionaire who enrolls in college to watch over his downtrodden son. He has the money, he has the confidence, but mostly he has the best lines:
“What lovely girls. How would you like a life of luxury and deceit?”
“We were doomed from the start. I’m an Earth sign. She’s a Water sign. Together, we made mud.”
“With the shape I’m in you could donate my body to science fiction.”
“Poetry is your favorite subject? Maybe you can help me straighten out my Longfellow.”
In the age before cell phones, texting, internet, and a bunch of fat kids staying inside all day and night playing on the computer, we had one of the great American comedies: BACK TO SCHOOL. In what was perhaps Rodney Dangerfield’s last great moment, this film was a big hit that featured several notable stars including Ned Beatty, Robert Downey, Jr. the late Sam Kinison, Sally Kellerman, Burt Young, Keith Gordon, Terry Farrell, and Paxton Whitehead, who steals the film and is great playing the uptight professor. Of course, the premise of a guy who never finished high school and goes to college with his son is preposterous and silly, but that doesn’t detract from a comedy which has gotten funnier with age. If you’re interested in 80’s time capsules, skip the John Hughes fluff, and go straight to Rodney’s class and have a party with him.
And if you never attended a party where Oingo Bongo was playing, you have your chance this Thursday at 7pm Thursday, September 5th. The location is Schlafly Bottleworks – 7260 Southwest Ave St Louis, MO 63143. Doors open at 6:30pm.
$6 suggested for the screening. A yummy variety of food from Schlafly’s kitchen is available as are plenty of pints of their famous home-brewed suds. Jimmie the bartender will be on hand to take care of you.
