Check Out The First Trailer For Neill Blomkamp’s ELYSIUM

On Monday, Sony Pictures unveiled a first look at writer-director Neill Blomkamp ‘s new film ELYSIUM by bringing it directly to lucky fans in Los Angeles, Berlin, Germany and Sao Paulo, Brazil in anticipation of the launch of the film’s first trailer. The 10 minute preview and new trailer had film goers and critics alike hailing the film as the next big thing to come along in the sci-fi, action genre.

Undoubtedly ELYSIUM will be a game-changer. I can’t wait for this – just to see how it fares against Blomkamp’s DISTRICT 9. This isn’t the only futuristic movie coming from Sony this summer. Their other “world gone to pot” venture is M. Night Shyamalan’s AFTER EARTH starring Will and Jaden Smith. Look for it to hit theaters on June 7.

I have to say, Jodie Foster’s not-to-be-messed-with character looks all the more fierce by the blonde, cropped hair. As Secretary of Defense, Delacourt directs Elysium’s security apparatus. She monitors Elysium’s borders and commands the Civil Cooperation Bureau, the organization that keeps Earth in line and its citizens where they belong. While her hawkish assessment of the illegal immigration threat is not shared by all of Elysium’s leaders, with a stream of filthy, graffiti-laden shuttles headed their way, she will do whatever necessary to keep Elysium safe.

She and the movie look amazing.

In the year 2159, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. The people of Earth are desperate to escape the planet’s crime and poverty, and they critically need the state-of-the-art medical care available on Elysium – but some in Elysium will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve their citizens’ luxurious lifestyle.

The only man with the chance to bring equality to these worlds is Max (Matt Damon), an ordinary guy in desperate need to get to Elysium. With his life hanging in the balance, he reluctantly takes on a dangerous mission – one that pits him against Elysium’s Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster) and her hard-line forces – but if he succeeds, he could save not only his own life, but millions of people on Earth as well.

The film is written and directed by Neill Blomkamp. Produced by Bill Block, Neill Blomkamp, and Simon Kinberg.

Starring Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Alice Braga, Diego Luna, Wagner Moura, and William Fichtner, ELYSIUM will be in theaters August 09, 2013.
