ALL SUPERHEROES MUST DIE : Damsel Here
What makes a superhero super? Is it their moral character, or their fantastic powers that allow them to vanquish all villains? What if their powers were lost and the very reason for their existence was suddenly drained from them? ALL SUPERHEROES MUST DIE is now out on Blu-ray and DVD, from Image Entertainment, and in honor of the release, WAMG decided to take a look at the other side of superheroes… the not so damsel in distress.
While there are plenty of innocent hostages, Sophie Merkley as Shadow isn’t one of them. Merkley joins the impressive company of strong women that includes Scarlett Johansson (Marvel’s The Avengers), Sarah Michelle Gellar (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”) and Sigourney Weaver (Alien). Check them out below.
Scarlett Johansson as BLACK WIDOW : Marvel’s THE AVENGERS
The only female in the Avengers Initiative, Natasha Romanoff (a.k.a Black Widow) has earned her place amongst the big boys. Despite not having any superpowers, she still kicks ass by using her skills as a highly trained spy for S.H.I.E.L.D. When we first see Romanoff in Marvel’s THE AVENGERS she seems to be in captivity. Don’t let this fool you. She always has the upper hand… as you can see in this clip.
Sarah Michelle Gellar as BUFFY SUMMERS : ‘BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER’
Buffy just wanted to have a normal teenage life. Cheerleading, dating, and fun with her friends. She didn’t expect to add “The Chosen One” to her list. See, she was never meant to be a normal girl. Buffy is a vampire slayer. Don’t let her snotty, superficial exterior fool you. Buffy is one tough cookie. Her innocent looks are what help her to lure the vampires in on her nightly hunts. Check out some of Buffy’s snark below.
Sigourney Weaver as ELLEN RIPLEY : ALIEN, ALIENS, ALIEN 3, ALIEN RESURRECTION
The character of Ellen Ripley is considered to be one of the best female protagonists of all time, and with good reason. Not only is the character strong, it set out to challenge gender roles in film, and landed Sigourney Weaver her first Academy Awards nomination for Best Actress. Weaver’s character rebels against the stereotypical slasher film stereotype. Instead of running around while screaming her head off, she transforms from nervous and scared to ass-kicking warrior. Check out the trailer to the the 1979 film that started it all, ALIEN here.
There you have it. A small glimpse into some of our favorite damsels who’ve got the situation under control. Who are some of your favorites? Be sure to let us know!
