70th Golden Globe Awards Winners; Jodie Foster Cecil B. De Mille Recipient (Video)
While LES MISÉRABLES and ARGO were the big winners Sunday at the 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards, ultimately it was a the night of the woman. The show was playfully hosted by friends and comedy partners Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Complete with elbow jabs, the two joked with all the stars and filmmakers sitting in the Beverly Hilton Ballroom in Beverly Hills, California.
Addressing Globe-nominated director Kathryn Bigelow, whose “Zero Dark Thirty” includes scenes of torture, Poehler scored laughs and gasps by conceding she hadn’t followed the uproar about the film, “but when it comes to torture, I trust the lady who was married for three years to (director) James Cameron.”
Women as a whole ruled the evening. On the movie side Adele gushed over her win for Best Song for SKYFALL, Anne Hathaway delivered a gracious speech after her Best Supporting Actress win for LES MISÉRABLES, Jessica Chastain earned a best-actress Globe for her portrayal of a driven CIA operative in ZERO DARK THIRTY and the youthful Jennifer Lawrence won comedy’s Best Supporting Actress globe for SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK.
Over on the TV awards side, it was all about HBO’s “Girls” and show creator/star Lena Dunham. Julianne Moore won Best Actress in a miniseries made for television for “Game Change” and Claire Danes took home the Globe for Best Actress in the Best TV drama series, “Homeland”.
One of the best moments came at the half way point of the show when Fey and Poehler returned on stage, drinks in hand, and joked that it was time to start drinking. After losing to Lena Durham (HBO’s “Girls”) Poehler said, “Everyone’s getting a little loose now that we’re all losers.” They even included fellow Globe loser actress Glenn Close in on their snarky act. Not to miss out on the fun, Dr. Aida Takla-O’Reilly, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, winked and told actor Bradley Cooper to give her a call.
But nothing was more poignant and honest then when Jodie Foster came on stage. The actress and director was honored at the 2013 Golden Globe Awards telecast with the Cecil B. DeMille Award for her outstanding contribution to the entertainment field. Foster’s stunning performances as a rape survivor in THE ACCUSED and as Special Agent Clarice Starling in the hit thriller THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS earned her two Academy Awards for Best Actress and a reputation as one of the most critically acclaimed actresses of her generation. Most recently Foster completed filming ELYSIUM opposite Matt Damon for director Neil Blomkamp.
Foster’s candid speech included a loving, heartfelt tribute to her mother, her modern family and the need for privacy in her life.
Afterwards Foster spoke backstage about changes, directing, Meryl Streep and Mel Gibson.
Here’s the complete list of winners.
