I AM BIG BIRD Update – Copper Pot Pictures Raises $124k On Kickstarter To Document Life of Big Bird Puppeteer
Copper Pot Pictures has exceeded its goal of raising $100,000 on Kickstarter to suport the production of I AM BIG BIRD, its upcoming documentary about 78-year-old Caroll Spinney, the man who has played Sesame Street’s Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch for more than four decades.
I AM BIG BIRD was backed by 1,976 individuals, with pledges ranging from $1 to $10,000, for a total of $124,115. Among Kickstarter projects, the movie is the 12th most-funded documentary and the 28th most-funded film.
“Caroll has touched the lives of so many, so we knew his story would resonate with lots of people,” said Dave LaMattina, who is co-directing the film with Chad Walker. “Watching nearly 2,000 fans pledge their dollars, share our videos with friends and family, and submit their own stories about Big Bird and Oscar was incredibly reaffirming. People want to know about the man beneath the feathers.
While Caroll has been with Sesame Street since it first aired in 1969, he has no plans to retire. I AM BIG BIRD will explore his current role at Sesame and his path to the show. The film will include footage from Caroll’s extensive private video archive, which captures behind-the-scene moments with family, Jim Henson and others.
I AM BIG BIRD has been in development since 2009 with the full cooperation of Sesame Workshop, and will be released by the end of 2013.
