I AM NUMBER FOUR – The Blu Review

By  |

Three are dead. Who is Number Four? From director D.J. Caruso (Disturbia), producer Michael Bay (Transformers) and the writers of TV’s Smallville, comes this gripping, action-packed thriller. John Smith (Alex Pettyfer) is an extraordinary teen masking his true identity to elude a deadly enemy sent to destroy him. Living with his guardian (Timothy Olyphant) in the small town he now calls home, John encounters unexpected, life-changing events — his first love (Dianna Agron, TV’s Glee), powerful new abilities and a secret connection to the others who share his incredible destiny. Complete with deleted scenes and more, I Am Number Four is an explosive, suspense-filled ride that will take you to the edge of your seat and beyond.

Now, this is one of those films where you have to take it for what it is… a teeny bopper sci-fy love story. I have heard multiple people describe it as an Alien Twilight, which really is accurate. If you take the film at face value, it’s entertaining. Still, I was not too terribly impressed by it. This is mostly due to the slow nature of the film. The story did not build in enough of a timely manner to keep me captivated. What did keep my attention is the look of the film. Presented in 16×9 widescreen with a 1.85:1 ratio, the film looked spectacular. My television was delighted to show off such a fancy looking Blu-Ray. The sound was equally as impressive (5.1 DTS-HD MA). I don’t even have surround sound and was blown away!!!

Extras
  • Deleted Scenes (18:58) The deleted scenes are worth watching. Director D.J. Caruso offers explanations to why each of the six scenes were removed from the film, which is rather interesting. Plus, it was interesting to see the scene with Karen Allen of Starman and Indiana Jones fame. Allen was cast to play Sam’s mother, but her scene never made it past the cutting room floor. It would have been nice to see her in the actual film.
  • Becoming Number 6 (12:00) Actress Teresa Palmer takes us through her journey to become number 6 as she talks about her physical training, wire work, and playing such a tough-girl character. It was pretty interesting to listen to.
  • Bloopers (3:15) These were rather disappointing. It was the same montage of actors messing up their lines. Nothing too funny here.
  • OVERALL RATING: 3 out of 5 stars

Nerdy, snarky horror lover with a campy undertone. Goonies never say die.
