Review: THE SQUARE

I don’t even know where to begin with this review! This movie was definitely different than anything that I have seen in a long time. Raymond and Carla (David Roberts and Claire Van Der Boom) are having an affair. Raymond is a construction supervisor in a seemingly perfect marriage, while Carla is married to a scheming sleezeball who is just came into a lot of money illegally. Carla finds the money in the house and is determined to take it and run away with Raymond so that they can live their lives happily together. It is when the money is taken that their worlds start turning into chaos.

The movie is an Australian thriller, that is rather shocking. I don’t think that I saw it as a thriller as much as random shocking, and sometimes grotesque scenes. Still, it is one of the most original films that I have seen in a long time. Because of the nature of the film, I can’t say too much about it for fear of ruining the effect, but it was a breath of fresh air. The thing that I respect the most is that they did not justify the affair. Their lives go completely terrible, not just for themselves, but all of those around them, once they steal  the money so that they can continue their affair. If there is one thing that I hate in films today, it is when a couple having an affair gets to live happily ever after… yuck! Instead, the more they tried to cover up their mistakes, the worse things got!

There was a short entitled “Spider” from 2006 that aired before the film, and it was quite fitting. A young couple gets in a fight because the boyfriend takes a joke too far. While pulled over for gas, he buys her flowers and chocolates, but also buys a fake spider that leads to a horrible ending to the short. I won’t give it away, but I have not cringed that much  in quite some time.

The short was fitting as an opener to the film strictly for the shock value. The actors were perfect for their roles (in both films) and the story was interesting to watch. The only thing that I will complain about is that the killed a dog… you never, ever kill a dog!!! That is normally a movie ruiner for me. Other than that, strap yourself in for an interesting ride.

Overall Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Nerdy, snarky horror lover with a campy undertone. Goonies never say die.
