Remembering Zelda Rubinstein (1933-2010)
Zelda Rubinstein may not be a household name for the average American, but many may be surprised to recognize her pictures. Moving pictures, that is. Originally from Pittsburgh, Zelda Rubinstein pursued a career in acting that led to an almost iconic persona for fans of creepy films. The 76-year old Zelda Rubinstein was taken off of life support late last year while in Cedar Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. She had reportedly been in the care of the hospital for over a month after her lungs and kidneys failed. LA Times has reported today that Zelda Rubinstein sadly has passed away.
Zelda Rubinstein has appeared in many films over the last 30 years. She made her breakout appearance in 1982 as the psychic Tangina in Tobe Hooper’s POLTERGEIST. She reprised the role in 1986 with POLTERGEIST II after appearing as The Organist in SIXTEEN CANDLES, then again in 1988 with POLTERGEIST III. Zelda Rubinstein was a mainstay as Ginny Weedon from 1992-94 on the popular TV series PICKET FENCES. Late in her career, she has one of her biggest roles in SOUTHLAND TALES as Dr. Katrina Kuntzler. That same year, 2006, she portrayed Mrs. Collinwood in a personal favorite of mine called BEHIND THE MASK: THE RISE OF LESLIE VERNON.
For those of us who remember her well for her craft, she will be missed. For those who are not familiar with her work, please take the time to honor her memory and discover her films for yourself.
