PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2 Gets a Director…
So it’s no secret that the sleeper horror hit of the year was Oren Peli’s PARANORMAL ACTIVITY. The flick was made for roughly $15k and grossed millions, beating out Halloween favorite SAW VI in the box office. That’s where things get interesting. It looks like Paramount has nabbed SAW VI director Kevin Greutert and writer Michael R. Perry to helm the sequel, working title PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2. Hmm…I dunno if I buy it. The first flick was quite good. It brought a Hitchcockian element of suspense to a dwindling horror genre and offered a breakout performance from director Oren Peli. Peli has gone on record saying this about the upcoming sequel:
†These guys get it, and the fans won’t be disappointed,â€
Is that enough for me as a fan? I don’t quite know yet. I find it ironic that ACTIVITY beat out the 6 SAW film at its home field (Halloween box office if you will). The only true issue I can see with this new development is the probable “sequelitus” that ACTIVITY 2 could sprout. We all know and “love” the fact that a new SAW film hits theaters every 4th week of October every year, but truthfully, I feel that ACTIVITY was an outstanding stand-alone. It’s one that will most likely be visited by viewers for many many years to come, not only on Halloween, but all throughout theyear. But we all know that studios don’t give a ouiji board about that (heh) and are just looking for the best way to shoot a penny their way.
But who knows? I could be speaking too soon and we might have a very skilled director with a very good script. I certainly hope so. More information will be posted as it becomes available, but for the time being, what do you readers think of this announcement?
PARANORMAL ACTIVITY is now available on Bluray and DVD and SAW VI will be available on both formats on January 26th 2010. Oren Peli’s AREA 51 (in the same vein as ACTIVITY) will hopefully hit theaters later this year.
