Robert Duvall to be Gilliam’s DON QUIXOTE?
If you haven’t seen LOST IN LA MANCHA, the documentary about Terry Gilliam’s efforts and failures in getting THE MAN WHO KILLED DON QUIXOTE completed, do yourself a favor. Run, don’t walk, to your nearest computer, add that sucker to your Netflix queue, and then wait a couple of days for its splendid arrival. It is an incredible look at what it takes to get a film made, and it makes you wonder how many project like this come so close to being realized only to fall apart in the eleventh hour.
Fortunately, Gilliam is not a man who knows the meaning of the word “quit,” and nine years after production began and ended abruptly on his film, he is restarting it all from the very beginning. In fact, he may already have his Don Quixote lined up.
In an interview with Collider, Robert Duvall made the claim that Gilliam wants him for the role, and, if they can raise the money, Duvall would be stepping into the role that at one time belonged to Jean Rochefort. Duvall also revealed shooting on the film will be taking place in Spain, where production had begun on the film back in 2000. Of course, I’m sure Gilliam won’t be setting up shooting around an air force base this time, which caused havoc on set with fighter jets flying overhead.
If this news ends up being true, it is an incredible step towards getting a film realized that is too long in the making. Gilliam is a visionary director, and this has been a passion project for him for quite some time. It would be great to finally see it come to fruition.
