H.R. Giger designing new creatures for THE GATE 3-D Remake

H2O Motion Pictures has released stills and information on the Alex Winter (Yes, Bill from BILL & TED) directed remake of Tibor Takács’ original film.   One of the most interesting tidbits is that H.R. Giger – known by most as the creature designer of the Alien from ALIEN – will be providing New Creature Design based off of the original designs by Randall William Cook.   Based off the stills released, they look practically the same as the original creatures.   So, I’m hoping that Giger is creating some new demons for our eyes to see.

Here is some of the synopsis straight from the press release:

When best friends Miles and Terry discover a mysterious crystalline rock in Miles’s back yard, they

quickly dig up the lawn in search of more.

Instead, they unearth the Gate—the opening to an underground chamber containing terrifying evil.

The teenagers soon realize the horror they have unleashed, as one dire event follows another. With

supernatural fiends invading suburbia, it’s up to the kids to find the secret that will lock the Gate

forever…if it’s not too late.

Below, I have included thee concept art for the film from H2O’s website:

I remember seeing the original as a kid and the film could be lumped in with THE GOONIES, GREMLINS and THE MONSTER SQUAD.   Actually, if you were to play all four of these films, it would make a great block of films to ween your little one into horror or sci-fi. This is one 80’s remake that I’m super stoked for.   While the original ‘GATE’ was innovative and imaginative, it is full of of flaws.   However, the charm really shines over those flaws and it is a film you should check out if you have never seen it.   Also, while your at it, check out ‘FREAKED’ by Alex Winter which he directed and acted in.

Thanks to Dread Central for the tipoff on this.

I is movie geek. Hear me rawr. Ok, time for the professional speak. I have always been a movie geek. For serious. My dad fed me on a healthy diet of Blade Runner & Clockwork Orange. My mother introduced me to horror & psychological thrillers like Rosemary's Baby & Robert Wise's The Haunting. These mere morsels of celluoid only whet my appetite. During my teenage years, you could find me searching for the next Full Moon pictures joint on the old VHS shelves. I dug through the archives of backwoods slashers of the 80's and ate spaghetti with the Italian maestros by the flavors of Bava, Argento & Fulci. Now, I have reached the lower realms of depravity by thinking that Cannibal Holocaust is required viewing & running a weekly podcast, DESTROY THE BRAIN!, covering horror & genre film. Hmmm, I'm going to stop while I'm ahead. Favorite Films: Halloween (1978), La Haine, Vertigo, Rosemary's Baby, Fight Club, Nightmare on Elm Street, Kidnapped (Rabid Dogs), The Blair Witch Project..and the list just keeps growing.
