Show to Check Out: ‘Bored to Death’

bored-to-death

A show about a man struggling at the job he knows best until he gets a phone call not meant for him, a phone call from a woman who mistakes his number for that of a private eye.   And what can this man do otherwise but pretend to be a private eye and solve cases with the help of his goofy and hindering friends.   Though this may sound familiar to some, and I do mean some, as it is almost about the same as the Andy Richter starring Andy Barker P.I. that had a short run on NBC a few years ago.   But fortunately for this show it boasts a bit of a more upscale cast as well as being on HBO where more adult like situations can run rampant and cursing is almost a requirement.

The show stars Jason Schwartzman, a struggling writer come hapless investigator, and from the trailer that is available on the HBO website it looks like it could be a little darling of a show.   From what is viewable from the trailer it looks like a good, quirky show that of course has to be set in New York.   And even though that becomes the typical back drop for most crime shows it definitely looks like they infuse some good old Woody Allen spirit into it.   It also looks to be paying tribute to old detective books as he hangs out in the shadows of New York and has to deal with his fair share of femme fatales.   Which they look to have some decent talent with Kristen Wiig and Parker Posey popping up somewhere along in the season.

As for the encumbering and necessary sidekicks they’ve brought in some decent talent with Ted Danson as Schwartzman’s magazine editor who finds out what he’s doing and insists on tagging along.   And for all those Hangover fans out there we have none other than the rising comic star himself Zach Galifinakis as a comic book illustrator and close friend of Schwartzman’s character.   They both look like they will be pretty funny additions to the show.   If you want to know more about the show definitely head over to HBO and check out the trailer and there’s actually a decent blog by the creator, Jonathan Ames, that sheds more light on the show and how the main character is based a lot off of him so it’s worth a check out.   As for the show, it will premiere September 20th at 9:30 on HBO so check it and give it some support and love.
