The Movie:

Paul Rudd and Jason Segel jump into something together that doesnt have Judd Apatow’s name on it anywhere…and they come out like champs! John Hamburg hasnt done a whole lot in the directors chair, but he did churn out a pretty funny ‘Along Came Polly’ which he also wrote and worked on Apatow’s ‘Undeclared’. Hamburg also helped write the ‘Meet the Parents’ films, and ‘Zoolander’ which put him in the good graces of Ben Stiller.

The film is about Peter Klaven (Paul Rudd), a 30 something real estate agent that just got engaged to his girlfriend Zooey Rice (played by the brilliant Rashida Jones). When it comes time for them to call their friends and family to break the news she quickly realizes that Peter doesnt have any close guy friends. He is the romantic, thoughtful guy that is always looking out for her best interests(basically the guy all of wives wish we could be, also see: The Nonexistent Male).

After he overhears Zooey talking to her girlfriends about this predicament he turns to his gay personal trainer brother Robbie(Andy Samberg) to help hook him up on some totally straight man dates in order to find his best man. After going out on a horrible brodate with one of Robbies clients, also known as “Voice Crack Guy”(Joe Lo Truglio), his mom decides to set him up with a friends son. They go out, hit it off and he comes to find out that his new “Friend” wants a little bit more when he slips him a bit of tongue at the end of the date.

When it comes time for the first open house at the Ferrigno estate(yes Lou Ferrigno’s house) he runs into Sydney Fife who is there to meet rich divorced women. After hitting it off with him Peter decides that maybe they can go on a man-date sometime. They go out to a place for beer and fish tacos and spend all night shooting the shit and finding out they both love the band Rush.

After a few weeks they become super best friends, hanging out at Sydney’s house, rehearsing Rush songs, drinking beer and doing general dude things. It eventually starts to make him less effective at home and Zooey gets noticeably irritated at him.

After a ridiculous speech during a rehearsal dinner, botched double date, and ridiculous billboards advertising Peter as a real estate agent they hit the wall and things become weird.

The Blu-Ray:

I was very surprise to see how crisp and clean the picture was after popping in the bluray. I didnt expect such vibrant colors to pop off the screen but it really adds to the movie. The audio was to be expected, nothing mind blowing, but it does do the job.

Special Features:

The commentary track features Rudd, Segel and Hamburg which is absolutely hillarious. These guys are great together and I really hope to see more stuff from them as a team again. There are some pretty great out takes as can be expected from two comedy maniacs like Rudd and Segel.

My favorite feature is the Make of mini doc which runs about 18 minutes long. You see how Hamburg takes the movie and its badass cast to the next level and avoids the pitfalls of your prototypical love(NOT romantic) comedy.

Overall Rating: 4 out 5
