Unconfirmed: Robert De Niro in ‘Machete’

There isn’t enough salt in the world to take this news with, but here it goes anyway.  Bloody Disgusting is reporting from an anonymous tipper that Robert Rodriguez’s upcoming ‘Machete’ film will feature not one, not two, but a whole slew of A-listers.  Leading this pack is none other than Jake La Motta himself, Robert De Niro.

The site is quick to point out that this source has been accurate in some stories in the past and not so dead-on with others.   At this time we’re taking this as nothing but a big, fat rumor.   Nonetheless, it’s a whopper.   De Niro has evidently signed on to play the role of Senator McLaughlin.   This is the same character Jeff Fahey played in the original ‘Grindhouse’ trailer for the film.

But the rumors don’t stop there.   According to this source, not only has De Niro signed on for ‘Machete,’ but so have Michelle Rodriguez and Jonah Hill.   I can see these two coming true before De Niro, but you never know.   There were some crazy cameos in ‘Grindhouse’.   Nicolas Cage, anyone?   And you have to throw in there the fact that De Niro has worked with Tarantino before, so a connection between he and Rodriguez might have been made at some point.   Tarantino is also serving as producer on the film.

While this is at present nothing more than a rumor, it certainly is one that’s not entirely unbelievable.   I’m sure confirmation will be coming soon shortly.   Filming is set to begin before the end of the month with Rodriguez and Ethan Maniquis co-helming.
