Danny Huston the Lionheart
He’s no Sean Connery, but Danny Huston has joined the cast of Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood film, which is still as yet titled. Huston will be portraying King Richard the Lionheart, who, in the Robin Hood legend, is away fighting in the Third Crusade and whose brother, Prince John’s malevolent exploits cause Robin Hood to take arms against the kingdom.Huston is joining a cast that already includes Russell Crowe as Robin Hood, Cate Blanchett as Maid Marian, Mark Strong as Sir Godfrey, Kevin Durand as Little John, and William Hurt as William Marshall.
Scott’s adaptation of the Robin Hood story has been in development since 2007 when Universal acquired the screenplay, which, at that time, told a more sympathetic story towards the Sheriff of Nottingham and was titled ‘Nottingham.’ Scott filled the director’s chair in 2008, and the screenplay was rewritten to tell a more standard Robin Hood story.
Huston will be the 20th actor to portray King Richard in a feature film. The most famous of these is the surprise cameo by Sean Connery at the end of 1991’s ‘Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.’
The film is currently filming in Wales.
