Ahhh. How I love a little Ricky Gervais with my Saturday morning coffee.  Co-written and co-directed by  Ricky Gervais and Matthew Robinson, ‘The Invention of Lying’ is the upcoming comedy about “The World’s First Lie.” Mark Bellison  (Ricky Gervais) is an actor whose found a loop hole in an ever-truthful  world.

“My character works in the film industry, where actors are really readers who tell completely factual stories,” Gervais said. “My character’s a loser who’s about to lose his job, and who’s lumbering through the 1300s. All he’s got to work with is the Black Death. But once he lies and pretends he’s found lost stories, he becomes the greatest storyteller in the world.”

I loved Gervais in last year’s little sleeper comedy ‘Ghost Town’ and have been a huge fan of his British series ‘Extras’ and ‘The Office.’ For any and all things Ricky Gervais, read his always  funny  blog at This Side of the Truth. His next project, ‘Cemetery Junction,’ began shooting in England in mid June and will be out in 2010.

Gervais  excitedly posted a comment made by ‘Star Trek’ Director J.J. Abrams after seeing ‘The Invention of Lying’:

Ricky Gervais proves, once again, that he is the master. Not only of comedy, but social commentary. ‘The Invention of Lying’ is as funny as it is biting, wholly original, and surprisingly moving. Is there such thing as an important comedy? Turns out there is, and this is it. If you’re still reading this, you should stop immediately and go see ‘The Invention of Lying!'”

In addition to Gervais, the film also stars  Jennifer Garner, Jonah Hill, Jeffrey Tambor, Christopher Guest, Rob Lowe, Louis CK, Jason Bateman, and Tina Fey. From Warner Bros. Pictures, look for ‘The Invention of Lying’ on September 25th, 2009.
