Box Office Battle: Bay Vs. The World

I’m curious as to what is going to be number one at the box office this weekend.   Very interesting.   Actually, betting against ‘Transformers: Devastator’s Swinging Metal Balls’ this weekend would be a bit like betting against Mike Tyson during any one of his fights pre-1990.   There’s just no chance anything is going to even come close to it.

What we can debate on, though, is whether ‘Transformers 2’ will make more this weekend than the combined total of every other movie out there.   It’s not like it hasn’t happened before, and it more than likely will happen here, too.   ‘Transformers’ made $60.6 million on Wednesday alone, then banked around another $30 million on Thursday.   The chances of it making anything less than $100 from Friday to Sunday are extremely slim.

The only other, new movie coming out this weekend is the genetically engineered to win Oscars drama ‘My Sister’s Keeper,’ starring Cameron Diaz.   Diaz’s openings are all over the mapping with starring movies pulling in anywhere between $9.4 million (‘The Sweetest Thing’) to $40.1 million (‘Charlies Angels’).   ‘Charlie’s Angels,’ of course, had a trio of leading actresses out front and center, so all of that can’t be attributed to Diaz.   Really, don’t expect ‘My Sister’s Keeper’ to even place, as Sandra Bullock’s ‘The Proposal’ and the comedy juggernaut that is ‘The Hangover’ are sure to pull in some decent numbers, yet again.

As far as ‘Transformers 2’ pulling in more money than all other films, it is going to be close.   It all depends on whether all the people who get turned away from sold out showing are going to go see something else or go home and watch the Michael Jackson coverage.

Here’s the way I see the weekend breaking down:

  1. Transformers: Megan Fox Running in Slo-Mo – $102.9
  2. The Proposal – $20.2
  3. The Hangover – $18.7
  4. Up – $15.4
  5. My Sister’s Keeper – $10.1
