Melissa:

What can I say about Paris 36? Was it an innovating story? Was it original? All I can really say is that if you liked the Moulin Rouge than you will like this story… but you have already seen it done… in a way better fashion!

Paris 36 follows Pigoil, a theater worker in a struggle to get his son back during 1936, Paris. Him and his fellow theater cohorts were shut out of their beloved theater and now must convince their mob-like city government to let them reopen and reinvent their show. This tale is filled with the struggle of a lower class civilization, romance between the star of the show and   a common man, and of course the villain that has fallen madly in love with the star… hence creating a very tricky love triangle.

I was mildly disappointed with the story as a whole.   It’s more like a cheap version of the Moulin Rouge than anything else. The songs weren’t as catchy, the characters weren’t as attractive or lovable, and the storyline was far from original. The only thing that was slightly different was the anti- sematism themes.

Also, correct me if i am wrong, but if you are expecting to release a musical in the US, I prefer it dubbed rather than subtitles. I find subtitles rather distracting in a movie when you are suppose to be concentrating on the visual aspects.

Overall, if you want a great musical, go see Moulin Rouge and skip this!

[Overall: 2 out of 5 stars]

Nerdy, snarky horror lover with a campy undertone. Goonies never say die.
