‘Flight of the Navigator’ Remake in the Works
Normally, I’m not one to follow the projects in progress from Disney, but this one caught my interest in a nostalgic way. In 1986, a great little live-action science-fiction adventure flick for kids came out from Disney called ‘Flight of the Navigator’. This is one of the few live-action Disney movies that I really enjoyed.
News hit recently that Disney is planning on a remake of this classic from the 80’s and that causes me some fixed emotions. On one hand, I would actually like to see this childhood favorite of mine get remade into a more serious movie for us grown-up kids by a good director from a decent script. On the other hand, the project is being handled by Disney and we’ve seen what they’ve done with their other live-action remakes lately. (i.e. – ‘Race to Witch Mountain’)
The original ‘Flight of the Navigator’ follows a 12-year old boy named Joey who is swept away in a sleek, shiny spacecraft where he becomes the ship’s navigator. The ship is filled with cool and unique alien specimens and Joey experiences the journey of a lifetime. In the end, Joey is returned home after eight Earth years have passed.
Despite the original featuring an early Sarah Jessica Parker performance, it also features Paul Reubens (Pee Wee Herman) as the voice of Trimaxion and delivers some great special effects and fun for it’s time. If you haven’t seen the 1986 original, I highly recommend running out to your local video store, or online equivalent, and checking this one out.
