‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Getting a Big-Screen Relaunch
This, like, totally bites! Roy Lee and Doug Davison at Vertigo Entertainment are developing a reboot of the ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ motion picture. This, evidently, won’t have anything to do with the television series, and Joss Whedon will have no involvement, whatsoever.
Vertigo is working with Fran Rubel Kuzui, the original film’s director, to relaunch the franchise without the aid of making the next film a sequel or prequel. Kuzui has held onto the rights to the property, even while Whedon was making the series his with the Fox series.
The idea behind the new film is to make a darker, event-driven film that follows the notion that every generation has its own slayer. As expected, Vertigo is thinking franchise.
“It was Roy’s interest in taking Buffy into a new place that grabbed us,” Kuzui said, noting that original exec producer Sandy Gallin also was consulted. “It was based on our respect for what he does, and his particular sensitivity to Asian filmmakers, that we wanted to work with him.”
Vertigo is currently meeting with writers.
