Sony and Aardman Strike Deal for Two Films
Sony Pictures and stop-motion masters Aardman Animations are moving ahead with the deal the two companies struck back in 2007. ‘Arthur Christmas’ and ‘Pirates!’ will be the first two feature films the two companies produce together.
‘Pirates!’ to be directed by Aardman co-founder Peter Lord and based on the series of books by Gideon Defoe, will be a classic, stop-motion film in the tradition of ‘Wallace & Gromit’ and ‘Chicken Run.’Â Defoe is currently working on adapting his books for the screenplay.
‘Arthur Christmas’ will be a fully CG-animated film. It will be a story that explains exactly how Santa gets around the world in one, single night. Sarah Smith and Barry Cook are directing from a script by Peter Baynham (‘Borat’ and ‘Bruno’).
“It’s incredibly exciting to be moving forward on these two movies,” Lord said. “The most important elements of any animated film are story and character, and we believe that in these films, we have characters to charm and stories to delight and engage.”
