Review: ‘Observe and Report’

Jody Hill has reached a level that normally takes writers/directors years to obtain and he is making it look way to easy. Everything he touches right now is instant, guaranteed comedic gold and ‘Observe and Report’ is nothing less than that.

Dont go into this movie expecting your typical slapstick stupid funny antics because what we have here is “darker” comedy or as Jody puts it “a f—ed up movie” and I will assure you that is what you are going to get. You will laugh, you will cringe and by the end of the movie you are going to be saying “Jody Hill is a f—ing genius! Also, please be warned that although another mall cop movie came out recently(not to mention is was horrible) that you can take the kids to, this is not that movie and please leave the kids at home.

Seth Rogen steps outside of his normal realm of funny and gears up to play Ronnie Barnhardt, a bi-polar mall cop who becomes obsessed with breaking the case of the mall flasher despite the local law enforcement(Ray Liotta) being put on the case. Ronnie uses his group of merry men, Dennis(Michael Pena), Charles(Jesse Plemmons who does a killer job in the movie as well) and the Yuen Twins(John and Matt Yuan) to take care of the mall while he is fast on the tracks of the flasher. Even more ridiculous than Ronnie’s behaviour is how the rest of the mall security team completely buys into the world that he lives in.

One of the greatest scenes in the movie is between Ronnie and Saddamn(Aziz Ansari) in which they go back and forth about whether he is a terrorist and to blame for the crimes that have happened in the mall. At one point Ronnie accuses him of trying to blow up the Chic-Fil-A and we get one of the greatest lines in the history of cinema, which I will not tell you because you need to see it for yourself, because its fuckin’ delicious.

I should also tell you that Anna Faris is one of the sexiest women in hollywood and she really shows you why in this movie. She is both beautiful and brilliantly funny, which is a wicked combo and melts my heart. She plays Brandi, the slutty makeup counter girl that Ronnie has a creepy obsession with and makes it his job to catch the flasher that has “psychologically” damaged her. There is also a scene between them that alot of people are freaking out about because it..well just go see it for yourself and tell me if you think people should shut up about it or not.

The entire cast will blow you away(Michael Pena I am talking about you dude!), everyone in the movie plays their part above and beyond what you would even expect. The soundtrack “kicks fucking ass”(thank you Jack Black in ‘High Fidelity’), and the movie delivers the goods, which happens to be sick and twisted comedy done in a way that only Jody Hill can and for that we salute you sir.
