SXSW Review: ‘It Was Great, But I Was Ready to Come Home’

“It was great, but I wasnt ready for it to end” because this was one hell of a indie film. The very beautiful Kris Swanberg wrote and directed this as her first feature full length film. You may recognize her name because she is married to the freaking awesome director Joe Swanberg who has revolutionized this whole ‘mumblecore’ indie film genre. You may also recognize her as Dia from the ‘Young American Bodies’ shorts that she and Joe do. Well from here on out you need to recognize her as a new force in the indie film director scene.

‘It was great, but I was ready to come home’ is essentially a very dialog driven “mumblecore” film that follows two mid 20’s women on a vacation/journey into Coasta Rica. Annie, played by Kris, and Cam played by Jade Healy set out to explore the stumble into new experiences. Although there isnt any real conflict in the movie, Annie is dealing with a recent breakup but challenging herself not to care about it. Its very obvious through the movie she is trying to fight some her inner demons and open up for their epic journey.

The movie was a little short, ran in at right under an hour but it was fantastic first film for Kris and I cant wait to see what she does next. Here is the trailer for the movie, and make sure to check out the official website:
