‘Freedom Formula’ being Developed for Singer
New Regency is planning to develop ‘Freedom Formula: Ghost of the Wasteland’ into a live-action feature film and hopes Bryan Singer (X-Men, Superman Returns) will direct. The film will be an adaptation of the comic book series from Radical Publishing.
The comic book has a futuristic premise in which fighter jets have been replaced by pilots who battle in racing exo-suits. The protag is a genetically engineered racer who learns his bloodline has the power to change society. — Variety
Michael Finch has been selected the write the screenplay and Fox will distribute the film. I’m curious to see what happens. I’ve not followed this genre of comics and Manga very closely, but have seen a couple of the anime versions of ‘Gundam’ and they’re kind of cool.
My friend Chad is much more into this than myself, but I will say there’s a huge market for these films… if they do them right! It seems there’s a simmering interest from the studios surrounding this genre, but it feels like everyone’s hesitant to be the one make the first serious move towards an actual movie.
Tobey Maguire had apparently acquired rights and had interest in developing a ‘Robo Tech’ movie, but who knows where that’s at? So, what do you guys think? I want to hear from the fans of this genre of Manga/Anime story. Are these movies “makeable” as live-action features? What would it take to do it right?
