Adaptations
Brett Ratner Signs on For ‘Youngblood’
Okay, I know what you were thinking when you read the headline. Â Oh my, God, Ratner is going to put together a remake of the ’86, hockey drama starring Rob Lowe and Patrick Swayze. Â No such luck. Â The Ratster is actually going to be directing an adaptation of the Image comic ‘Youngblood’.
‘Youngblood’, which began in 1992, is about a secret band of super heroes overseen by the government. Â Creator Rob Liefeld wanted to create a comic about super heroes living in the “real world” where they would be treated like athletes or movie stars.
“Most of the great graphic novels are gone, and ‘Youngblood’ is one of the few comic books left with tent pole potential,†Ratner told Daily Variety. “It was a real personal passion project for me, and a lot of people wanted (‘Youngblood’), but the amazing thing about the guys at Reliance is the speed with which they’re able to move.â€
The Reliance that Ratner is talking about is Reliance Big Entertainment, an Indian media conglom who inked a development deal with Ratner’s shingle Rat Entertainment, as well as Julia Roberts’ Red Om Films, during the Berlin film fest.
“The great thing with Reliance is they also have the ability to partner up or co-finance the film with a studio,†added Ratner. “It really offers freedom for the talent they’re working with.â€
So, what do you think? Â Is Ratner going to ruin this comic adaptation like so many believed he did with ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’? Â Is ‘Youngblood’ too much of a “been-there-done-that” storyline to really get a following? Â Were Ratner to have remade the Lowe/Swayze ‘Youngblood’, who could have possibly filled those two actors’ shoes? Â Let us know by commenting below!
