Box Office Report Jan.23-25: Underworld’s Lycans Don’t Have Enough Bite To Take Out The Mall Cop!
The third installment in the Underworld series (first chronologically) opened in theaters this weekend only to be shot down by Paul Blart:Mall Cop! Mall Cop was number 1 for the second week in a row with $21 Million. Underworld:Rise Of The Lycans came in $1 million dollars behind in second. All of the Award buzz help out Oscar favorite Slumdog Millionaire, which bolted from #10 to fifth place with almost $11 million for the weekend. Clint’s Gran Torino also managed to stay in the top 5 with $16 million. This weekends loser was the kid friendly Inkheart which open in 7th position with a meager $7 million. Here is how the top ten stacked up:
- Paul Blart:Mall Cop                                $21,500,000
- Underworld: Rise of the Lycans              $20,700,000
- Gran Torino                                           $16,000,000
- Hotel For Dogs                                      $12,360,000
- Slumdog Millionaire                               $10,550,000
- My Bloody Valentine 3DÂ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â $10,050,000
- Inkheart                                                 $ 7,725,000
- Bride Wars                                             $ 7,000,000
- The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button   $ 6,000,000
- Notorious                                              $ 5,700,000
We will have to see if Paul Blart can make it a 3-peat at number one, if the Oscar buzz will keep Slumdog and Benjamin Button in the top ten or if the vampires of Underworld have any bite left. If not, I’m sure a pissed off Liam Neeson killing some kidnappers in ‘Taken’ or the romantic comedy ‘New in Town’ with Zellweger invading Minnesota or possibly a demented Elizabeth Banks in ‘The Uninvited’ would love to take the top spot away.
