TMNT, will they finally go dark? Eastman says maybe…

By  |

I suppose many of you are probably reading this and thinking I am completely out of my gourd to even give this “news” the time of day, but here’s the catch… I grew up watching and enjoying the original trilogy, despite the cheesiness. I was excited about the “new” movie when I heard rumors that it would be a darker return to it’s comic book roots, only to be disappointed when it ended up being a CGI kid-friendly film. [Although, there was a period of time that Ang Lee was attached and that was worrisome.] So, with all hope lost this news hits the web…

Co-creator of the original comic book, and owner of Heavy Metal magazine, Kevin Eastman recently posted on his Heavy Metal forum the following comments:

[“There has been much talk between Imagi and Warners to do a better “re-invention” (newest Hollywood buzzword) of the TMNT’s, in a live action film–like what was done with Batman. Back to basics, back to the origin and the intro of the Shredder, etc…there have been talks, trips to Northampton to talk to [TMNT co-creator] Mr Laird, and discussions with the original “first” TMNT film director Steve Barron to come back and do it right–but no official word yet…will keep you posted.”]– Sourced from JoBlo.com

To be honest, as much as I’d love to see this happen, I fully accept that the franchise is dead and really should probably stay that way. Eastman apparently no longer owns any rights to the material and likely has little power over the ultimate decision(s). Let’s all just move on and we can each relish in a decent TMNT movie in the wonderful world of our dreams.
