‘Book of Eli’ brings the hero out in Denzel…

By  |

Denzel Washignton’s next film in a recent busy spurt. Washington succeeded greatly with ‘American Gangster’ in 2007 followed by ‘The Great Debaters’ that same years. The remake of ‘The Taking of Pelham 123’ is due out next (2009) and then we’ll find ourselves struggling to survive another post-apocalyptic film with Washington playing a man who apparently holds the key to the world’s survival in ‘Book of Eli’. This film is written by Gary Whitta, who is also writing the screenplay for the new ‘Akira’ adaptation. Directing this quasi-western-thriller event are the Hughes brothers, Allen and Albert, who began with ‘Menace II Society’ and ‘Dead Presidents’. This will be their first directing gig since 2001 with ‘From Hell’.

[The story takes place after America has been turned into a barren wasteland, and will see Washington play a warrior who, and we’re quoting here, “fights to bring society the knowledge that is key to its redemption.† And, we’re hoping, a warrior who hasn’t seen The Postman.] — EmpireOnline.com

The concept sounds interesting, if well-done, and there’s no debating Denzel is a great actor. I think the Hughes brothers have the talent, but I hope they do a better job than they did with ‘From hell’… a film I thought was mediocre, at best. One thing’s for sure, it will have to be better than Costner’s snore-fest ‘The Postman’… a movie I have attempted to watch three times now, and am yet to finish without falling asleep.
