Big, Dumb Action Version of ‘Tarzan’ Coming Soon

Guillermo del Toro is going to have his hands full for the next couple of years and has moved on from the live-action version of ‘Tarzan’ he was believed to take on. Del Toro’s loss is Stephen Sommers’ gain, as the ‘The Mummy’ and ‘Van Helsing’ director is in talks to helm the film.

It was announced almost two years ago that Jerry Weintraub would be producing the film for Warner Brothers. Stuart Beattie (‘Pirates of the Caribbean’, ’30 Days of Night’) is writing the screenplay, which will apparently follow the original Edgar Rice Burroughs ‘Tarzan of the Apes’ book rather than any previous film version.

Sommers’ next film is next year’s tentpole film for Paramount, ‘GI Joe: Rise of Cobra’. What kind of mumble-mouthed title can they come up with for ‘Tarzan’?

My pick is ‘Tarzan: Master of the Apes and Ruler of the Jungle’.
