Is RocknRolla looking for a new home?

By  |

According to the LA Times, Joel Silver, producer on the much anticipated Guy Ritchie action film, ‘RocknRolla’, may be looking to ship the film off to a different studio.   The producer was seen last week showing the film to executive from Liongate and Sony Pictures.   Silver initially said he was screening the film to other studios to get advice about marketing and releasing the film.

However, a top executive at one of the studios has said that it is clear Silver is looking for someone to take the film off his hands.   On top of this, Warners chief Alan Horn has said, “I think it’s a well-made picture, and while it’s in spots, it’s very English.”

Horn went on to say, “I don’t think it’s broadly commercial.   It feels like a film that deserves a spirited release, not a wide one.   Joel has an 800-screen deal, which we’ll honor, but we might not be willing to spend the marketing money he wants us to.”

Warner Bros. is also looking to get rid of ‘Trick ‘r Treat’, the Bryan Singer-produced horror movie that’s been on the shelf for over a year, and ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, the new Danny Boyle film.

The chief concern facing Warner now is that its slate is becoming overloaded.   Distribution chief, Dan Fellman, said, “We’re distributing more movies from September to the end of the year than most studios do in an entire year.”

On a somewhat related note, Warner’s ‘The Dark Knight’ is sure to cross the $450 million mark on Wednesday.
