The popular horror novel co-written by Stephen King and Peter Straub has been in and out of developmental Hell for years now, but recently achieved “hold” status again … this time due to “budgetary issues.”
The project, originally considered as a feature film, was eventually reborn as a TV mini-series concept which was picked up by TNT (Turner Network Television). DreamWorks is behind the production that once again doesn’t seem to want anything to do with a smooth course of progress.
This brings up an interesting point … Stephen King’s literary works seem to have a history of being a real B*TCH to get made, with several of them going through this same trend of development and/or production problems. And, if they’re not having problems getting made, films based on King’s works are often not nearly as good as the books, ultimately failing to convey the true mood and concept of the novels.
For example, ‘Cujo’ and ‘Carrie’ are two films that did anything but do justice to King’s novels. Many did not find ‘The Stand’ mini-series to be worth its salt either. What do you guys think? Are King’s films not screen-adaptable, or are we simply not seeing the right filmmakers taking on the projects. The two King pieces that translated well were ‘Shawshank Redemption’ and ‘The Green Mile’ … both of which happened to be directed by Frank Darabont. What Stephen King books do you guys think need to be adapted into films?
