Review: ‘The Onion Movie’ on DVD

After some troubled times between the studio and filmmakers Tom Kuntz and Mike Maquire, the temporarily shelved project finally sees the light of day.

The film formerly known as The Untitled Onion Movie, which was originally created in 2003, is now just The Onion Movie, written and directed by Tom Kuntz and Mike Maguire. The film releases today on DVD.

The Onion Movie reminds me of the classic Amazon Women on the Moon, but is approached from a more contemporary point of view. Anyone who enjoyed In Living Color or Kids In the Hall will probably like this movie. Its a bit more edgy than your typical Saturday Night Live.

Unlike so many movie parodies today that make fun of other movies, The Onion Movie delves much deeper into our culture as a whole. The movie is a collection of sketches structured around the concept of The Onion as a television news program, with commercials and reality bits cut in periodically. The humor is witty and biting, the sarcastically tinged commentary is appropriate to our times and the movie is laced with a string of promotional bits for a fake new Steven Seagal action movie called Cockpuncher. For those fans of The Onion’s online presence, or those familair with Amazon Women on the Moon, this is definitely worth checking out. For those who are easily offended, keep your distance.
