Review: ‘The Love Guru’

Ram Man:

This has to be the most over-publicized movie ever put out. We see the Guru Pitka every hour on every channel or wherever you look. This normally means two things…you are sure to see every funny scene in the trailer and the movie is going to blow!

Jane Bullard (Jessica Alba), owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs, has her team about to play for the Stanley Cup. That’s when her star player Darren Roanoke (Romany Malco) decides to leave his wife and his game leaves with her. Justin Timberlake plays a super endowed goalie Jacques “Le Coq” Grand for the LA Kings, who shacks up with Roanoke wife. Timberlake has possibly the worst Canadian accent since Bob and Doug McKenzie in Strange Brew! Bullard decides to hire a self help Guru that she knows to help Roanoke and his wife get back together.

Enter Mike Myers as the Guru Pitka… the Love Guru. Pitka an American kid raised by monks in India. Myers has channeled his inner George Harrison to bring out this manifestation. Pitka soon begins to work his “so-called” magic on the hockey star so he can cash in and get a spot on Oprah. This is also when the hodge-podge of old retread jokes we have seen in every Myers film begin also. Thank goodness he does the camera glance in order to let the audience know when to laugh. Pitka soon learns its about people and not success..plus he develops a thing for Bullard.

Like i said before, what few funny scenes there are you have seen in the TV trailers. The funniest line in the film actually appears as an outtake during the credits. One bright spot, is a fine performance by Verne Troyer as Coach Cherkov. It’s Mike Myers so there are cameos (Jessica Simpson, Val Kilmer, Kayne West and Mariska Hargitay). This film is targeted to the summer vacation squad, 15-21. Otherwise listen to Ram man and avoid this film because it blows stronger than Katrina!

Scott:

Yikes, Mike Meyers made his long awaited comeback, but it was mostly like a revisit. Most of the jokes in this movie were essentially just recycled ‘Austin Powers’, or ‘Waynes World’ jokes. It was almost embarrassing and I kind of felt bad for him as the movie drug on. I will say that Vern Troyer was one of the only redeeming qualities from this movie, and of course Jessica Alba!

I don’t want to sound too harsh about the whole movie. I did laugh at the frequent scenes with Stephen Colbert and Jim Gaffigan play hockey commentators and every scene they are in is an onset of laughs. I also loved the multiple celebrity cameo’s with Jessica Simpson, Celine Dion, Val Kilmer, Kanye West and yes, Mike Meyers.

All in all I would say that if you arent too burnt out on Austin Powers, or Mike Meyes for that matter, you would enjoy this movie.

Michelle:

Oh Mike…what happened? You were away so long and this is your comeback? Apparently too much time with Deepak Chopra.   I thought I was watching “So I Married a Love Guru.” And what was with all the musical numbers? 88 minutes you’ll never get back.
