Review: ‘Strange Wilderness’ on DVD
Written and directed by Fred Wolf, this movie is about as good as Without a Paddle, which he wrote. That’s not necessarily a compliment. Much like Without a Paddle, Strange Wilderness has some funny bits. However, the film just really dies as a movie. I suppose if you’re really into these comedies that feature a long string of oddball situational comic bits, quick-witted toilet humor dialogue and awkard shock-value gags, then Strange Wilderness is right up your alley.
Strange Wilderness stars Steve Zahn as Peter Gaulke, a Steve Irwin type host of a wildlife show. Unlike the late Irwin, Peter is an idiot and a loser who has taken his dead father’s show and run it into the ratings garbage dump. Having learned that his show is about to be canceled from its 3am time slot, Peter is desperate for a way to save the show. When his friend Bill Calhoun shows up claiming to know where the legendary Big Foot is hiding out, Peter sees his fate suddenly changing. What he soon learns is that nothing on this expedition is going to go their way.
The cast also includes Jonah Hill (SuperBad), Kevin Hefferman (Beerfest), Ashley Scott (Just Friends), Peter Dante (Little Nicky), Allen Covert (50 First Dates), Harry Hamlin, Robert Patrick, Blake Clark and Justin Long (Live Free or Die Hard).
