In case you missed it … ‘Eagle vs. Shark’
Eagle vs. Shark was written and directed by Taika Cohen. This romantic comedy hails from New Zealand and tells the tale of two “nerdy” social outcasts who are meant for each other, but only one of them knows at first. Loren Horsley plays Lily, a cashier at the Meaty Boy burger joint. Lily is shy and introverted, but finds love at first site when Jarrod (Jermaine Clement) walks in to buy a burger from her. Lily makes every attempt within her ability to “flirt” with Jarrod, but he seems uninterested. When Lily crashes Jarrod’s costume party, she finds a way to win him over by beating everyone at the party but Jarrod in his Fight Man (Mortal Kombat style) video game tournament, making him the champion.
The awkwardly appropriate couple gets on well, but has their ups and downs, as Jarrod trains to fight his old high school bully. In the process, Jarrod has ostricised Lily and his family, making a fool of himself until he finally realizes that he’s losing Lily, the one thing that’s real for him. This movie is great, if you’ve got any history at all as a geek, nerd, dweeb or … well, if you were the school jock or prom queen, you may not appreciate the heart and humor, but I encourage you to try.
