WAMG First Look: ‘The Mutant Chronicles’
I came across this little sci-fi action flick while writing Who is that guy? Oh, its Ron Perlman! At first, it seemed likely to be a low-budget, direct-to-DVD type of film. I started hearing little bits here and there and then decided to dig in and do a little more research. Well, it didn’t take much digging. The Mutant Chronicles is directed by Simon Hunter, a young Scottish film-maker relatively fresh to the biz.
The plot, according to IMDB.com, goes like this [short and sweet]:
23rd century soldier Major Mitch Hunter (Jane) leads a fight against an army of underworld NecroMutants. Supplementing this synopsis, scifimoviepage.com writes: “Samuel is keep of the Chronicles, a book that prophesies both the rise of the Mutants, and the ‘Deliverer’ that will destroy them. Samuel believes he is that Deliverer destined to journey deep into the earth and destroy the source of the mutant scourge. He manages to recruit Mitch, along with a handful of like-minded soldiers: Steiner, honour bound Bauhaus officer; sword wielding Severian; street fighter El Jesus; fearless beauty Duval; and stoic warrior Juba.”
The cast is actually what got me more interested. Its no secret that I’m a fan of Ron Perlman, but take a looksy at the full cast, which is mighty impressive from such a green director doing what is likely a modestly budgeted sc-fi action flick:
Ron Perlman (Hellboy) as Brother Samuel
Thomas Jane (Punisher) as Major Mitch Hunter
John Malkovich (Eragon) as Constantine
Devon Aoki (Sin City, War) as Valerie Duval
The trailer, which is actually the first seven minutes of the movie, gives an idea of the level of production and the scale of the film. The quality of the trailer is rather low, but its worth a peek.
