‘Brutal Massacre: A Comedy’

When I first got wind of this movie I thought it would be crap. Then I saw the trailer on YouTube and thought maybe, just maybe … it could be funny. So, I am keeping my expectations nuetral and plan to rent it when it releases. Yes, rent … unfortunately, both the theatrical and DVD rights have been picked up by Anchor Bay. Meaning … a theatrical release, if any, will be VERY limited and the DVD will likely have a less-than excellent extras appeal, although there apparently is a documentary on the making of this mockumentary that will be released after the movie comes out. Ha … cool.  Oh well, it does have that direct-to-DVD look on its face.

Brutal Massacre: A Comedy (2007) is a horror-comedy mockumentary, written and directed by Steven Mena (Malevolence). The movie is about Harry, played by David Naughton (An American Werewolf in London), a once-loved horror auteur who is all but washed up. Shunned by Hollywood, Harry is given one final mercy project, which will prove to be the film that either resurrects or obliterates his career. The film becomes a textbook case of “what can go wrong …  will.” The plot sounds very similar in essence to Paul Mazursky’s The Pickle, but focuses on a horror film instead of a sci-fi film … and, Brutal Massacre also is shot as a mockumentary, with the POV of a documentary crew following Harry everywhere, catching every bit of misery on film. The cast also includes Brian O’Halloran (Clerks),  Gunnar Hansen (Texas Chainsaw Massacre), Ken Foree (Dawn of the Dead) and three actresses from The Evil Dead … Ellen Sandweiss, Betsy Baker and Theresa Lilly.
