Right or wrong … ‘The Thing’ being remade!

By  |
. Whether we like it or not, apparently the rumors are true … there are plans in development for a remake of John Carpenter’s The Thing. Yes, the beloved 80’s sci-fi horror spectacle that is sacred to so many fans is being desecrated by that ever-looming Hollywood evil that has struck so many times before. Not a great deal is known as the project is still in the writing phase, but apparently writer-producer Ronald Moore, whose work includes Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek, is putting ink to paper on this unholiest of betrayals. But, its the way of things when art and business collide. We can only hope that Moore does the original justice, the project gets a good director and they don’t completely ruin the idea with excessively overdone CGI effects. Part of the “charm” of the original is what amazing and effective work they did with very low-tech effects. Rob Bottin, only 22 years old at the time he began work on The Thing, is given credit for pioneering what was a benchmark of special makeup effects at the time. Bottin was so exhausted from the work he put into this film that industry legend Stan Winston had to fill in while working on the dog cage scene. Now, tell me who’s gonna risk their health by way of exhaustion these days, working at a computer … I still say passion and some good ol’ elbow grease goes a long way.
