Coming to Theaters
Repo!
So, let’s talk about “Repo! The Genetic Opera,†and the magic that still lingers around this town, Hollywood.
There is a lot of bother as to why studios don’t take chances, which is true from time to time. Just ask Robin Hardy; his follow-up to the original “Wicker Man†just got shut down, which is too bad, as the original “Wicker Man†is a fine piece of film. A sequel thirty years late interests me more than, say, a sequel every year on the dot, ala “Saw.â€
“Saw,†however, did and does what Robin Hardy and the people of Summerisle probably could not: Make tons and tons of money. There is a silver lining, no doubt, but it has nothing to do with Robin Hardy or his “Cowboys for Christ.†I speak of the progeny of a man known primarily†¦for sequels.
Darren Lynn Bousman has made his passion project.
You see, sometimes, when you make an incredible amount of money for a studio, they will let you do something totally atypical. For example, do you really think “Schindler’s List†would have happened without the momentum of “Jurassic Park?†Wait, I’ll answer that for you. No, it wouldn’t have.
So, here we are. It is 2008, and what do we have to look forward to this summer?
“Repo! The Genetic Opera,†that’s what.
Say what you will in regards to the casting of hotel heiress, Paris, or whether or not the music suits your gentle palate, “Repo!†is bound to be a spectacle the likes of which you do not see in a theater very often. I’m not saying this is going to break box-office records, because it won’t. It will live on, I wager, much longer than many of this years sequels, prequels, re-imaginings, restarts or what have you. It will exist in those dark corners inhabited by “Dark City,†“A Clockwork Orange,†and even “Rocky Horror Picture Show,†films that were maligned, misunderstood, and overlooked. It’s an opera, sure, but this is a film that sings to the eyes.
Sounds like magic to me.
“Repo! The Genetic Opera” opens August 8, 2008.
