Geeks on Movies
Recommended Reading: ‘Hitchcock’s Notebooks’
. | This one is especially for the hopeless, truly obsessed movie geeks out there. Anyone who has seen their share of Hitchcock’s films know that there is virtually NO WAY that ANY modern film-maker could honestly say they have NOT been influenced, even a little, either consciously or subconsciously, by The Hitch. On this note, I HIGHLY recommend Hitchcock’s Notebooks to any die-hard cinephile who holds as much interest in the art and craft of the film-making process as they have joy in watching the finished products.
Hitchcock’s Notebooks is written by Dan Auiler, who has also written another tome on The Hitch titled Vertigo: The Making of a Hitchcock Classic. This particular recommended reading is filled with fascinating movie-geek stuffing, from shooting script excerpts to storyboards, some great and many unseen photos, production notes and letters, etc. All of this priceless material, giving us much desired depth and in-sight into one of our greatest directors is due largely to Hitchcock’s various secretaries, as he himself rarely kept notes or any other kind of physical representation of his unique and often revolutionary creative process. This is a biggun’ weighing in at 560 pages, but a good bit of this is photos, copies and such. Interested? I know you are … so, dig in! |
