Film Critics feel the Generational Burn
Apparently, the epidemic of unemployed film critics is larger than I had originally gathered. Variety.com columnist Anne Thompson has written a really interesting, yet somewhat upsetting article on the current trend of film critics being given the proverbial boot … and its being blamed on a more techno-driven youth culture finding its wares on the web, instead of in the newsprint. This is something I can definitely understand, but I don’t agree with blaming the presence of Internet movie news and blog sites. Sure, this comes as a compliment to the hard-working, devoted movie geeks like us here at WeAreMovieGeeks and, uh … yeah … those other “similar” sites out there. However, I don’t see why the truly talented and enjoyable critics can’t simply transition to the papers’ websites.
