. | Legendary actor Charlton Heston died Saturday night at home with his wife at his side. Heston was 84 years old and, while the cause of his death has been kept private, we do know that Heston had acknowledged symptoms indicating Alzheimer’s disease in 2002. Heston was loved by many, serving as president of the Screen Actors Guild and as chairman of the American Film Institute. Heston also marched with the civil rights activists in the 50’s. Heston was controversial as well, serving as president of the National Rifle Association, but he stood strong for what he believed in despite his critics and I respect him for that.
Heston was best known for his portrayal of larger-than-life characters in the religious and historical epics of the 50’s and 60’s, starring in films like The Ten Commandments and Ben-Hur, for which he won the best actor Oscar in 1959. As this genre of film died out, Heston quickly transitioned to the rising tide of the 70’s sci-fi genre, starring in films like Planet of the Apes, The Omega Man and Soylent Green. Charlton Heston’s life and career will remain with us for generations to come and has left a distinct mark emblazoned on our culture that will not fade easily. |
